Write-up by Nicholas Lim

Singapore Season is a showcase of Singapore's multi-cultural heritage, creativity and vibrant art scene in key global cities. This year, Singapore Season has come to two cities in China - Beijing and Shanghai.

Singapore Season in China celebrates the long standing multi-level partnership between Singapore and China. Having had the experience handling events previously, 2 final year Mass Communication students and I were invited from Hangzhou over to Shanghai to help out as Assistant Floor Managers for the Singapore Evening event.

Singapore Evening attendees are mainly Singaporean who are influential and have achieved great success working in China. In addition, there are representatives from Media Development Authority (MDA), National Arts Council (NAC), and Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA).

The experience working in such a big event was wearisome yet fruitful. As this event is happening out of Singapore, we don't have much time to rehearse on the set. Final rehearsals started on the eve of the event. Also, people managing the set design took a while in the day to touch up the final portions of the set to ensure that everything is perfect. Besides, there are also the crew, ushers and people doing registration waiting to be briefed and all, making everyone hard up for time.

On the evening itself, that's when everyone got excited. People out on the front line doing registration and ushering dressed up in traditional costumes; children from China's Little TV Stars and Singapore Shanghai International School who are singing with Sun Ho during the grand finale started to jump around feeling thrilled. Thanks to the flawless cooperation between the crew team and the performers, the event was a huge success.

Through observation, i realised that being amiable is a quality a person should possess to make fellow workers feel better working together. I've also seen the ugly side of a celebrity whom people thought to be generous, charity-oriented, pretty and stunning. Almost everyone on the set was appalled by the way she registered her displeasure and her sarcastic remarks to children.

Behind the glamour, there is truth. Imagine an international model like Junita Simon without make-up, without heels, without dressing up. People might not even recognise or notice her. It is a contradiction when someone who earns for others discriminates those whom she is earning for. Perhaps life is all about getting contradictions right.

Y.Shouting ends here.
